BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The RV Olivet Nazarene University women's soccer team progressed to the CCAC Tournament Semifinals with a 2-0 victory over the eighth-seeded Holy Cross Saints Saturday afternoon. Annabel Murley scored the game-winning goal in the first half and Olivia Lorenc provided the second goal in the second half.
Both teams had to fight the elements throughout the match. With 30-mile-per-hour winds and rain, the players had to adjust throughout the contest. With the wind at their back, ONU dominated the first 45 outshooting the Saints 10-1. The Tigers placed four shots on target to HCC's one. Murley scored the match's first goal in the 38th minute. Keeley Francis drove a cross into the box which proved difficult for the visitors to clear. As a result, the sophomore from Valparaiso, Ind. was first to react to the loose ball and loft it into the back net. The lone goal was all that separated the two teams heading into the intermission.
Halftime: RV Olivet Nazarene 1, Holy Cross 0
The Tigers were quick to find the second goal within the first five minutes of the second half. Kaylee Evers played a ball behind the Holy Cross backline for Katie Knutte to chase. Knutte slipped in Alaina Bahr towards the endline and the midfielder was able to pick out Lorenc at the back post for the sliding one-time finish. With the goals secured, ONU had to preserve the lead with the added wind element in the visitor's favor. HCC forced the Tigers' netminder, Tessa Kowalski into five saves in the second half en route to her second shutout of the year.
The Tigers will now move on to the CCAC Tournament Semifinals and will welcome the fourth-seeded Trinity Christian Trolls to Snowbarger next week.
