ONU DROPS WEEKEND SERIES AT OAKLAND CITY
ONU DROPS WEEKEND SERIES AT OAKLAND CITY

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - The Olivet Nazarene University baseball team battled throughout the four-game series starting on Feb. 13, but they ultimately fell to Oakland City in all four contests.

In the first game, the Tigers broke through in the fourth inning when Jacob York delivered a two‑run homer, scoring Tyler Kavanagh to give ONU a 2–0 lead, and later added two more runs in the sixth thanks to aggressive baserunning—Payten Young scoring on an error and Kavanagh stealing home to tie the game 4–4. Despite the momentum, Oakland City responded decisively in the bottom half of the inning with three runs, including solo and two‑run homers, to pull away. ONU managed four hits on the day, with York accounting for two RBIs, while pitchers Tyler Snoreck and Camden Kearney combined for eight strikeouts but were unable to contain the late surge from the Mighty Oaks.

In game two, ONU put together several strong offensive moments but couldn't overcome Oakland City's early surge in a 9–5 loss to conclude Friday's action. The Tigers fell behind quickly after a four‑run first inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Nazhir Bergen, and a two‑run homer by Marcos Arocho in the second pushed the deficit to 6–0. ONU responded in the third with back‑to‑back RBI singles from Alex Seaton and Andrew Mack, then continued to chip away as Troy Vosburgh delivered a solo homer in the fourth and Seaton added another RBI single to bring the score to 8–4. Kydin Horvath cut the margin further with a sixth‑inning homer, but Oakland City answered immediately with an Eric Correa solo shot to extend the lead. Despite collecting nine hits—including multi‑hit outings from Seaton, Young, and Mack—the Tigers couldn't close the gap as early miscues and Oakland City's power display proved too much to overcome.

To start Saturday's action, the Tigers mounted multiple rallies but came up just short in a 6–4 loss. ONU broke through in the third inning when Caleb Kendregan drove in Connor Janik, then tied the game in the fifth on a solo homer from Alex Seaton, who finished with two hits, a double, and a stolen base. ONU kept pushing late, scoring twice in the seventh on an RBI single by Jacob York and a fielder's‑choice RBI from Payten Young to momentarily even the game at 4–4. However, Oakland City responded in the bottom half with a decisive two‑run homer from Dicky Gonzalez, sealing the difference. Despite collecting eight hits and getting strong offensive contributions from Seaton, Janik, Kendregan, and York, the Tigers couldn't capitalize enough to overcome the late swing.

In the series finale, ONU showed resilience late but couldn't overcome Oakland City's early scoring in a 6–3 defeat. After falling behind 3–0 in the second inning, the Tigers cracked the scoreboard in the third when Andrew Mack singled home Jude Coursey, trimming the margin to 3–1. Although Oakland City extended its lead with runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings, ONU continued to battle, highlighted by Alex Seaton's seventh‑inning two‑run homer—his second hit of the day—which brought Coursey home and pulled the Tigers within striking distance. Seaton finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Mack added two hits and an RBI as part of ONU's six‑hit effort. Despite solid relief work from Luke Shoven and a late offensive push, the early deficit proved too steep, and the Tigers came up short in their final‑inning rally attempt.

The Tigers look to bounce back when they head to McKenzie, Tenn. for a three-game series starting Friday, Feb. 20 against Bethel (TN).
