OLATHE, Kan. - The No. 12 seed Olivet Nazarene University women's basketball team advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament with a 82-71 win over No. 5 seed Mid-America Christian University on Friday inside the Cook Center. The Tigers advaced to the second round of the national tournament for the first time since 2021.
ONU set the tone from the opening tip, racing out to a quick first-quarter lead. The Tigers scored the game's first four points and never looked back, forcing early turnovers and converting them into transition opportunities. Brooklyn Marshall and Calee Biedron scored the first two baskets, while Lindsey Nell knocked down an early three-pointer to stretch the defense. ONU's defensive pressure disrupted MACU's rhythm, holding the Evangels to just 12 points in the period as the Tigers closed the quarter ahead 26–12.
MACU responded in the second quarter with increased offensive efficiency, but Olivet matched the energy and maintained control. Jayden Flagg and Ava Mikesell provided a spark off the bench, combining for timely three-pointers that helped ONU weather the MACU push. Marshall continued to attack inside, and Nell added scoring and playmaking as the Tigers consistently answered MACU baskets. Despite being outscored 27–24 in the quarter, ONU went into halftime with a 50–39 advantage.
The Tigers came out of the locker room poised and aggressive, quickly reasserting momentum in the third quarter. Caroline Sikkink opened the half with a bucket in the paint, and Flagg followed with a three-pointer to push the lead back to double digits. Olivet's ball movement led to quality perimeter looks, while the defense forced turnovers that resulted in fast-break points. Although MACU found success attacking the lane, ONU held firm and carried a 69–57 lead into the final period.
Olivet showcased composure and depth in the closing quarter to seal the victory. Preslee Michael and Nell delivered key three-pointers to halt MACU rallies, while the Tigers continued to score efficiently inside through Marshall and Biedron. Defensive rebounds and points off turnovers proved crucial as ONU protected its lead down the stretch. Despite a late push from the Evangels, the Tigers closed out the game from the free-throw line and points inside, securing the 82–71.
With the win, Olivet improves to 26-6 on the season and advances to play the host school, MidAmerica Nazarene University on Saturday at 6 p.m.
