BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University softball team hosted the No. 24 Saint Xavier University Cougars for a Saturday Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) twin bill. The Cougars shutout the Tigers in game one, 10-0 and the Cougars came back and won game two, 7-6.
Game One: No. 24 SXU 10, ONU 0
The Tigers sent Kori Fricke to the circle in game one. The Tiger right-handed pitcher went the distance, and fanned six batters. Fricke dropped to 9-4 on the season.
The Cougars marked their runs with one run in the first and second innings while tallying two in the third and three in the fifth and seventh innings. They lashed out 16 hits on the game.
Allie Timm, Margaret Landis, and Vannah Vaughan scattered the three hits for the Tigers as they fell in game one, 10-0.
Game two: No. 24 SXU 7, ONU 6
Head Coach Hannah Gardner sent Emily Blucker to the circle in game two. The Tigers right-hander surrendered seven runs, on nine hits, and struck out five batters. Blucker moved to 6-2 on the season.
After the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Megan Mann deposited a two-run home run over the right center fence making the score, 2-1. The Cougars knotted up the score in the second inning and took the lead on a two-run home run in the third making the score, 4-2. The Tigers struck for another run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Mann. The Tigers cut the Cougar lead in half at 4-3.
ONU took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, both Margaret Landis and Matti Lanie reached on singles. Zoe Oshiro then tied the game at four with an RBI single. After Haley Dobson walked, Mann continues her impressive game two as she laced a single to left field and drove home Lanie. The Tigers took a 5-4 lead. The Cougars retook the lead in the next half inning on a two-run double. The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI base-knock by Dobson.
The Cougars scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning. The Tigers went down in order in the seventh as the Cougars completed the sweep as they won, 7-6.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Tigers have a quick turnaround as they resume their suspended game and play a non-conference game against Roosevelt University on Monday, April 18th. Action at Tiger Field starts at 3 p.m.
