BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Caleb Corro scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Olivet Nazarene University men's basketball team to a 107-103 barnburner win over Calumet Wednesday evening in the Rittenmeyer Center.
Twenty of his points in the first half, and the Tigers needed every one of them to keep pace with the hot-shooting Crimson Wave. Calumet (8-8, 3-6 CCAC) knocked down 10 three-pointers at a 50-percent clip to take a 48-46 lead over the Tigers into the halftime locker room.
The deficit grew to seven at 69-62 with 13 minutes remaining before ONU went on a game-changing 12-2 run to claim the lead. Caleb Swearingen layups sandwiched a layup and a 3-pointer from freshman guard Tyler Curl to tie the game. Andrew Bennett capped the emphatic run with a deep-range shot to give the Tigers their first lead of the game.
ONU never looked back, maintaining their lead for the remainder of the game to cruise to the victory, their second in a row and third win in four games.
Corro only had one made field goal in the second half, but went 10-of-11 from the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes to reach his new career best.
And he had plenty of help from his teammates, with five other Tigers reaching double figures in the win. Swearingen filled in 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Daniel Murphy and Luke Yeager both finished with 13 points each. Andrew Bennett knocked down three triples on his way to 10 points and Tyler Curl came off the bench to score 10, as well.
The Tigers will look to build on its modest win streak when they host Saint Xavier Saturday afternoon.
