CHICAGO, Ill. – In a matchup between two top teams in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, the road teams prevailed as the Olivet Nazarene University baseball team split a four-game series against Saint Xavier this weekend.
The Tigers dropped the series-opening doubleheader at Watson Field Friday by scores of 10-3 and 11-1 before bouncing back with 4-3 and 5-3 wins at Ferrell Field Saturday.
Saint Xavier (22-18, 15-9), who entered the series sitting atop the CCAC standings, overpowered ONU in Friday's doubleheader. They scored 10 unanswered runs to kick off the opening game, aided by a seven-spot fourth inning, and the Tigers never recovered. Evan Pogioli and Alex Seaton plated RBIs in the closing innings.
The Cougars raced out to another fast start in the nightcap, building a 6-0 lead through four innings. Sam Reczek got the Tigers on the board with an RBI single in the fourth, but that would be the only run ONU could scratch across in the defeat.
Saturday followed a similar script, with Saint Xavier striking first again with two runs in the opening inning. Taylor Bledsoe lifted a sacrifice fly to score Reczek and cut the lead to one in the second inning before tying the game two frames later with an RBI single.
Saint Xavier jumped ahead with a run in the fifth, but the Tigers fought back with a two-out rally in the final inning to pick up the win. Aden Aukland and Evan Pogioli came up clutch with RBI singles in the seventh, and Michael Freitas tacked down the win in the bottom of the inning for his fifth save of the season.
ONU finally struck first in the series finale, with Aden Aukland plating Jack Dupuis with an RBI single in the opening inning. Saint Xavier took the lead with a pair of runs in the third, but the Tigers would quickly reclaim the lead behind a three-spot in the fifth.
In the seventh inning, Aukland launched a home run over the wall in left center to score a pivotal insurance run. Tyler Snoreck closed out the ONU win on the mound.
The Tigers, now 20-19 overall and 16-12 in the CCAC, will take on Viterbo in the conference finale this weekend.
