ELKHART, Ind. – The Olivet Nazarene University women's swimming & diving team opened up their 2022-23 campaign with a pair of wins at the Bethel Quad Invite Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers competed against Davenport (Mich.), Bethel (Ind.), and Aquinas. The scores for the contest were as follows:
Olivet Nazarene: 180 – Aquinas: 80
Olivet Nazarene: 158 – Bethel (Ind.): 92
Davenport (Mich.): 152.5 – Olivet Nazarene: 133.5
ONU started the meet strong as they placed first and fourth in the 200-medley relay, with times of 1:49.91 and 1:53.16, respectively. Halle Briner then took second in the 200 freestyle with a sub 2-minute performance. Briner also took third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.70, while Allison Pearson took the top-spot in the IM at 2:11.41.
Katelyn Inman and Paige Howell went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke. Inman touched the wall first at 1:00.32 while Howell clocked in .16 seconds later at 1:00.48. The following race, the Tigers swept the podium in the 100 breaststroke; Pearson went first (1:06.01), Megan Schroeder placed second (1:06.44), and Julieta Vega took third (1:06.68).
Inman and Howell went 1-2 again, this time in the 200 backstroke. Inman clocked in at 2:09.35 while Howell finished at 2:10.42. Vega added a gold for the Tigers, going first at 2:28.00 in the 200 breaststroke.
Taylor King touched the wall second in the 50 freestyle sprint, beating out her teammate Schroeder in a photo finish. A mere two-hundredths of a second separated the two, with King at 25.61 and Schroeder at 25.63. Grace Barnhart took second in the meet's second-longest race, clocking in at 5:20.84 to take silver in the 500 freestyle.
The Tigers wrapped up the meet with second and third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle, with 1:43.08 and 1:45.99 performances, respectively.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Tigers will host the ONU Tri Invitational at the Perry Center in Bourbonnais, Ill. next Saturday. The meet is set to begin at 9 a.m. CST.
