No. 4 Marian Shuts Out Tigers, 3-0

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene Women's soccer team fell to the No. 4 Marian University (Ind.) Knights ,3-0, Monday evening in the final match of the ONU Labor Day Classic Sep. 6 at Snowbarger Sports Complex. The Tigers played the Knights tough before a man advantage late in the second half made a three-goal advantage too much to overcome.

The Knights opened the scoring at the 13-minute mark. Marian's Allie Schlom reached the Tiger's end line and cut a low cross to an awaiting Madison Deckard at the top of the six-yard box for the first-time finish. The Tigers' stout defensive unit limited the dangerous Marian attack to only two quality chances in the first period. Outside of the early goal, Annabell Murley defended the other quality chance by the Knights using her body in the vital moments to put off the Marian attacker midway through the half. The score at the intermission stood at 1-0, with the advantage to the Knights.

Halftime: Olivet Nazarene 0, No. 4 Marian (Ind.) 1

Marian's two-time NAIA First Team All-American looked to double the Knight's advantage two minutes into the second half. Erin Oleksak drove towards the Tigers' net and let rip a shot that skimmed off the top of the goal frame. Katie Knutte had the best chance of the game for ONU in the 64th minute. She rose up and put her head onto an Abbey Cash set-piece service redirecting the ball just wide of the near post. Olivet kept the pressure on the Marian side looking to equalize for the last 20 minutes and change. Against the run of play, Oleksak broke the Tiger back line forcing Murley to take her down in the box before the attacker could get her shot off in the 75th minute. Consequently, Murley was shown a red card and Oleksak converted from the spot to double the lead. A third goal by Marian's Schlom tallied 39 seconds later effectively put the game away.
