GOVERNORS STATE HANDS ONU ITS SECOND CONFERENCE LOSS OF THE SEASON ON SATURDAY

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University women's basketball team traveled up I-57 to compete against the Jaguars of Governors State University on Saturday afternoon.  The Jaguars take down the Tigers, 85-71. 

 

Caroline Boehne and Kaitlyn Clark kicked off the scoring for the Tigers in the first quarter as they trailed, 6-5.  The Jaguars led by as much as eight, but the Tigers tried to cut into that deficit.  With four minutes left, Olivia Demosthenes and Boehne closed the gap to three at 18-15.  Then, with 1:20 left in the quarter, Kaitlyn Engle and Maggie Cora marked the final four points of the quarter but the Jaguars were still clinging to a 24-21 lead going into the second quarter.

 

At the beginning of the second quarter, Clark and Demosthenes provided the early offense for ONU.  The Jaguars led 26-25.  The rest of the quarter was dominated by Governors State as they outscored ONU 18-5 the rest of the quarter.  The Jaguars took a 44-30 lead going into the locker room.  Boehne led the Tigers with eight points and four rebounds in the half.

Cora and Zanna Myers combined for the first five points of the third quarter as the Jaguars still led, 48-37.  The Jaguars led by as much as 23 in the third quarter and limited the Tigers to only three field goals. Governors State led the Tigers, 65-45, at the end of the quarter.  As time expired, Boehne hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 20. 

 

Kaitlyn Engle and Karina Smits buried a three-pointers to start the fourth quarter for the Tigers as they still trailed by 18 at 69-51.  Then, Cora drained back-to-back three-balls which made the score, 73-57. With five minutes left, Clark, Anne Peters, and Boehne combined to cut the Tiger deficit to 13 at 79-66. 

 

The Jaguars extended their lead to as much as 18 points in the final two minutes of the game as they handed the Tigers their second conference defeat, 85-71.
