ONU CELEBRATES SENIOR DAY WITH SPLIT AGAINST IUSB

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – On a day when the team honored its six seniors, the Olivet Nazarene University softball team secured a doubleheader split against Indiana South Bend Friday afternoon at Tiger Field.

The Tigers kicked off the day with an early finish in a 10-2 rout of the Titans before faltering late for a 5-2 setback in the nightcap.

The bats stayed hot for ONU in the opener, with the Purple & Yellow Gold sending out 16 hits in just five innings to cruise to the big win.

Ali Fullinghim got the Tigers on the board in the second inning with a two-RBI double. This proved to be the catalyst for a five-spot as Zoe Oshiro followed up with an RBI single and Stephanie Hause plated a two-RBI base hit of her own to have the Tigers up 5-0 early.

Kahiwa Ili opened the following frame with a blast over the wall in left field to set up another big inning. Oshiro notched another RBI single before Faith Mikos sent out an RBI double to center to push the lead to eight.

Fullinghim plated another run in the fourth, setting up the Allie Timm walk-off base hit in the fifth to cap the big win. Timm was also credited with the win on the mound, going the distance to pick up her 12th victory of the year.

The Tigers seemed poised to pull off the doubleheader sweep, with Fullinghim and Alyssa McCord plating early runs to stake a 2-0 lead that maintained through the fifth inning.

But IUSB (13-25, 7-7 CCAC) pieced together a two-out rally in the top of the sixth, resulting in four late runs to steal the lead. They would add another run in the seventh to put the game out of reach for ONU.

The split moves the Tigers to 21-13 overall and 7-5 in the CCAC. They will take a break from league play to host St. Mary of the Woods Tuesday.
