BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University men's basketball team connected on half of their shots from beyond the arc to take down Viterbo 74-60 Wednesday evening in McHie Arena, marking their third consecutive win.
After shooting at a 41.7-percent clip in the opening half, the Tigers upped that mark to 58.3 percent in the second period, connecting on 7-of-12 shots from deep over the final 20 minutes.
Despite the precise shooting down the stretch, it was a defensive battle in the early goings. The Tigers held a one-point advantage at 15-14 when both teams locked down defensively, resulting in a nearly three-minute scoring drought. Daniel Murphy reignited the scoring with a transition 3-pointer that sparked the ONU offense, closing out the period on an extended 15-8 run to take a 30-22 lead into halftime.
Tyler Curl knocked down a 3-pointer to open the second-half scoring to put ONU up by double figures. And it was a sign of things to come as the Tigers caught fire from deep. Leading 36-26, ONU connected from 3-point range on five of their next six possessions to take a commanding 18-point lead.
Viterbo (5-15, 3-10 CCAC) fought back with a run of their own to get to within 10 points at 61-51. But back-to-back layups from Murphy snapped the spurt and put ONU back up by 14. The Tigers led comfortably from there.
Corro led four Tigers in double figures with 28 points, knocking down six 3-pointers and going 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. Curl went 4-for-5 from deep to finish with 16 points. Murphy recorded 12 points and Caleb Swearingen had 11.
Luke Braman led the bench unit with six points. He also led the team in rebounding with seven boards. Murphy brought down six and Swearingen secured five.
The Tigers, now 8-5 in the CCAC, will travel to No. 25 St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday.
