BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Caleb Corro scored in the paint with six seconds remaining to lift the Olivet Nazarene University men's basketball team to a come-from-behind 76-74 win over Indiana Northwest Saturday afternoon in McHie Arena.
With the game tied at 74-74, the Tigers had the ball with the shot clock turned off and Corro made his move. The redshirt junior guard drove to the lane to hit a contested lay-in to put ONU in front with just a few ticks of the clock remaining.
IU Northwest (10-4, 4-2 CCAC) had a decent look to tie the game on an attacking run but the shot was too strong. Caleb Swearingen cleaned up the defensive rebound to seal off the ONU win.
Corro's game-winner capped off a massive comeback for ONU, who trailed by as many as 21 points in the second half.
A sluggish start allowed IU Northwest to take a commanding double-digit lead on the back of an early 18-0 run. The RedHawks built a 16-point lead at halftime and came out of the break scoring eight of the first 11 points of the second period to go up 53-32.
But the Tigers began to chip away, largely in part to Corro who filled in 17 points in the second half to get his team back in the game.
ONU trailed 70-60 with five minutes to play when Luke Yeager converted on a three-point play to spark a big run. The Tigers would score 14 unanswered points to jump in front, with Tyler Curl sinking three free throws to give the Purple & Yellow Gold their first lead of the game.
Corro capped the run with a difficult fadeaway jumper to extend the Tiger lead to four. The RedHawks split two sets of free throws and scored a second-chance bucket to tie the game, setting up the dramatic finish.
Corro led all scorers with 20 points, going 7-of-16 from the floor and knocking down two 3-pointers. Yeager finished with a career-high 15 points. Daniel Murphy contributed 13 points and Curl cashed in three triples on his way to 12 points.
The win improves the Tigers to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in the CCAC. They will continue conference play when they travel to Holy Cross Wednesday.
