WHITING, Ind. – The Olivet Nazarene University baseball team opened its three-game series with the Calumet College of St. Joe Crimson Wave on Friday afternoon. The Tigers scattered 10 hits and earned a 15-2 victory in seven innings.
Ethan Underwood towed the rubber in game one of the three-game series. Underwood had another masterful outing as he surrendered two runs on three hits, and sent eight batters down on strikes. The Tiger right-handed starter moves to 7-1 on the season with a 1.70 ERA.
The Tigers got off to a great start as Robert Jackman led off the game with a home run to left field. The only blemish to Underwood's day came in the bottom of the inning as Calumet hit a two-run homer and made the score, 2-1. The Tigers then took the lead in the second when Kai Hudson scored on a single by Alex Ortiz and when Rod Lucas walked in a run with the bases loaded. The score moved to 3-2. The Tigers added more runs in the third inning. With one out and two on, Gunnar Pullins drove-in Jacob Bulthuis on an RBI single. After Pullins and Hudson scored on wild pitches, Jackman smacked his second home run of the day as the Tigers grew their lead to 8-2.
The Tigers kept piling on the runs in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Tyler Wheeler and Bulthuis forced in runs. Then, Hudson hit a sacrifice fly, Pullins delivered a run-scoring single, and Ortiz doubled home a run. The Tigers led 14-2. ONU added another run in the seventh as Christian Amlong hit a towering home run to left center and extended the lead to 15-2.
Underwood pitched a scoreless seventh inning as the Tigers grow their winning streak to an NAIA-best 17 games as they topped the Crimson Wave, 15-2, in seven innings.
