BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Taking a brief intermission from CCAC play, the Olivet Nazarene University softball team capitalized early to cruise to a nonconference doubleheader sweep of St. Mary of the Woods Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field.
The Tigers pounced on the Pomeroys for six runs in the first inning to pick up a 10-2 win in six innings in the opener before striking for three runs in the opening frame to coast to a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
Zoe Oshiro set the tone for the Purple & Yellow Gold with a leadoff triple, quickly scampering home on a wild pitch during Faith Mikos' walk. Kahiwa Ili continued her hot stretch with an RBI double, setting up a two-RBI double off the bat of Gwen Bender. Meegan Randall capped the big inning with her first career homer, a two-run shot over the wall in left field, to put the Tigers up six early.
The Pomeroys (18-20) got two runs back in the fourth, but ONU scratched across a pair of runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to end the game early.
Randall tallied her third RBI of the game on a sacrifice bunt, and Ali Fullinghim roped in a run on an RBI single to account for the runs in the fifth. Oshiro used her speed on the basepaths again to scurry home on a wild pitch in the sixth, and Bender walked it off with a sacrifice fly.
Allie Timm cruised to her 13th win of the season as the ONU starter, allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out eight in four innings of work. Olivia Saldana closed out the game with two scoreless innings on the mound.
Timm carried some momentum into the second game, opening the scoring with an RBI single up the middle. She was promptly plated when Ili sent a ball flying over the wall for her team-leading fourth home run of the season to make it 3-0 in a hurry.
St. Mary of the Woods got to within one with a pair of runs in the fourth, but Saldana again shut them down late with three scoreless frames to seal off the ONU win. Jauslyn Nells was credited with the win, going four innings with only two earned runs on five hits.
The Tigers will return to CCAC action with a home doubleheader against St. Ambrose Thursday.
