FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 14 Olivet Nazarene University softball team traveled to Warrior Park for a twin bill against the Indiana Tech Warriors on sun-splashed Friday afternoon.
Game One: No. 14 Olivet Nazarene 10, Indiana Tech 1 F/5
After both teams went down in order in the first, the Tigers struck for a couple runs in the second. Kate Landis (JR/Beecher, Ill.) singled to lead off the inning. With one out, Haley Dobson (JR/Beecher, Ill.) singled advancing Landis to second. After Kate Landis and Dobson advanced on a wild pitch, Matti Lanie (JR/Momence, Ill.) grounded out to second to drove in Kate Landis. Katie Marker (JR/Yorkville, Ill. ) then reached on an error and Dobson crossed home plate to make the score 2-0.
The Tigers added to their lead in the third inning. After Sara Beers (SR/Greenwood, Ind. ) singled and Miranda Southall (SR/Wilmington, Ill.) was hit by the pitch, Alli Davis (SR/Mount Zion, Ill. ) grounded out to first moving the two runners to second and third. With one out, Kate Landis reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Sydney Harrison (SR/Lansing, Ill.), then, singled home Beers and grew the Tiger lead to 3-0. Then, Dobson sent a rocket down the left field line and unloaded the bases for a three-run double growing the lead to 6-0. In the fourth inning, Southall extended the Tiger lead on a two-run homer. Later in the inning, Dobson continued her big day at the plate and hit a two-run double making the score 10-0.
The Warriors got on the board, in the bottom of the fourth, on back-to-back doubles as the score moved to 10-1. Southall pitches a complete game striking out four batter allowing two hits on one run as the Tigers take game one, 10-1 in five innings.
Game Two: No. 14 Olivet Nazarene 11, Indiana Tech 1 F/6
The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the first and cracked the scoring column on sacrifice fly by Lanie making the score 1-0. The Warriors then countered with a run of their own on an RBI single tying the game at one. The Tigers retook the lead in the second on a solo home run by Davis making the score 2-1.
The Tigers put up a crooked number in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Kori Fricke (SO/Manteno, Ill.) singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Then, Kailyn Ngo (SO/Riverside, Ill.) singled home Fricke. After Beers drove in Ngo, Southall hammered a three-run homer to right field making the score 7-1. The Tigers were not finished yet as Kate Landis singled and Harrison drove her in on a double making the score 8-1. Dobson then continued her strong day and singled home Harrison. A few batters later, pinch hitter Vannah Vaughan (FR/Indianapolis, Ind. ) singled home Dobson, while Fricke, who doubled, advanced to third. Margaret Landis (FR/Beecher, Ill.) then singled home Fricke. The Tigers opened a 11-1 lead.
The Tiger offense dominated in the late innings and Fricke pitched a complete game gem as the Tigers sweep the doubleheader taking the second game 11-1.
