Coaching Philosophy:

To honor Christ with the mantle of leadership he’s placed upon me through the vehicle of football. It’s my duty to raise up servant leaders while building great men, ambassadors for ONU, and champions on and off the field. It is my duty to use the parallels of football and life to assist the men in our program to become greater men than I am.

Bio:

Avante Mitchell is in his 25th year of coaching and currently serves as the Head Football Coach at Olivet Nazarene University. A proven program builder with experience at both the high school and collegiate levels, Mitchell has spent the last 15 seasons coaching college football, leading teams with a strong blend of competitive excellence, academic achievement, and culture-driven leadership.

Mitchell was named ONU’s head coach in January 2024 and quickly helped guide the Tigers back into national relevance. Under his leadership, Olivet earned multiple NAIA Top 25 rankings during the 2025 season—marking the program’s first sustained national ranking presence in five years. In his first two seasons at the helm, Mitchell led the Tigers to consecutive winning seasons, establishing a strong foundation for sustained success in the MSFA.

A quarterback developer and offensive leader, Mitchell also served as ONU’s Quarterbacks Coach and mentored MSFA-Midwest Offensive Player of the Year Christian Dhue-Reid, one of the NAIA’s top offensive performers. Dhue-Reid posted 2,070 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, only two interceptions (11:1 ratio), a 178.9 efficiency rating, and five rushing touchdowns across eight games. Mitchell’s staff and player development has also produced numerous top honors, including First Team NAIA All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, and 35+ All-MSFA selections.

Mitchell is responsible for the total operations of the ONU Football program, including roster management, recruiting, academic oversight, staff development, fundraising, and program culture. He also oversees a combined operating and recruiting budget exceeding $1.5 million.

Prior to ONU, Mitchell served as the Head Coach at Lawrence Technological University (2020–2023), where he became the winningest coach in program history. He guided LTU through the challenges of the COVID-19 era while building one of the most improved programs in the country. After inheriting a 1–9 team, Mitchell led LTU to a 7–4 record and a top-half conference finish by 2021—an improvement that ranked among the top five across all collegiate levels. His teams achieved multiple national rankings on offense, defense, and special teams, including No. 1 in punt return average and top 15 national rankings in total defense, passing defense, and rushing defense. He also helped raise more than $100,000 in fundraising and led the program to record academic success, including a 3.27 team GPA.

Mitchell’s collegiate coaching background also includes stops as Defensive Coordinator at Taylor University and Concordia University Ann Arbor, where his defenses consistently ranked among the NAIA’s best. At Taylor, his units produced top-25 national rankings in every major defensive category, and his special teams units led all levels of college football (NCAA and NAIA) in blocked kicks over a two-year span. He has coached multiple All-Americans and high-level award finalists while also serving in football operations roles involving travel planning, budgeting, and program administration.

In addition to his coaching experience, Mitchell has been selected for prestigious national professional development opportunities, including the 2025 NFL Ozzie Newsome General Manager Forum and Quarterback Coaching Summit. He also holds several leadership roles within college football, including serving as the MSFA Competition Chair and as a member of the NAIA Football Executive Committee.
