ONU SECURES SERIES WIN OVER CALUMET WITH SUNDAY SPLIT

WHITING, Ind. – After sweeping the Crimson Wave in a rainy doubleheader Friday, the Olivet Nazarene University baseball team secured the season series win over Calumet with a split Sunday afternoon at the Oil City Stadium.

A big first inning cost the Tigers in an 8-6 setback in the opener before rebounding with a 17-8 rout in the nightcap.

After getting stymied by the ONU pitching staff Friday, Calumet (6-17, 3-11 CCAC) jumped on the Tigers for six runs in the first frame Sunday. ONU got on the board with two runs in the third on RBI singles from Aden Aukland and Evan Pogioli and then cut the lead to two on RBI hits off the bats of Takumi Kimoto and Jack Dupuis in the fourth.

But a Crimson Wave two-run homer extended the lead back to four. Sam Reczek and Dupuis plated runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, but it was not enough to come back. Joey Boland was tagged with the loss as the ONU starter.

The Tigers responded with plenty of firepower in the series finale, putting up a six-spot and a five-spot to cruise to the big win.

Five different Tigers recorded multiple RBIs in the nightcap, led by Dupuis and Pogioli with three apiece. Auckland, Reczek, and Caleb Kendregan all plated two runs each. Aukland also picked up the win on the mound, pitching one clean inning before passing the rock to Matthew Cousino and Michael Freitas to close out the win.

The series win improves ONU to 17-16 overall and 13-9 in league play, slotting them third in the CCAC standings.

The Tigers will close out the season series against Trinity Christian on the road Tuesday.
