SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Monday night's win for the Olivet Nazarene University men's soccer team came with a six-goal outburst in the home win. The Tigers were looking to take that effort into their road game with (RV) Spring Arbor University (Mich.) five days later under the lights. Yet, the Cougars had other plans. The first half was scoreless despite a combined 17 shots but after the final 45 minutes Spring Arbor tallied three goals and a 3-0 win at the expense of the Tigers.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair as both teams shared possession of the ball. ONU (2-3-1) and Spring Arbor (4-2) had eight and nine shots, respectively. Both teams put balls on goal within the first 20 minutes testing the goalkeepers and forcing the defenses to start strong. However, it wouldn't be until after halftime that either team would find the back of the net.
It only took 2:06 for the score to move from scoreless to 1-0 at the start of the second half. The Cougars started their attack and it resulted in back-to-back corner kicks. The second ended in the first goal of the game. The Cougars' Alex Sokalski scored off an assist from Jacob Crull. Following the goal Spring Arbor did not relax and continued to attack the ONU defense and 16 minutes later Morris Kamara made it 2-0 for the Cougars. He was assisted on the goal by Lewis Jones. The Tigers responded with two shots over the next few minutes but it would be Spring Arbor who struck one more time before the end of the game. In the 72nd minute Kamara scored his second goal of the game when he got behind the defense and found the net.
ONU's goalie, Chris Taborn (SR/Matteson, Ill.) was tested all night and recorded eight saves, a season-high. Isiah Handspike had the shutout for the Cougars and had six saves in 90 minutes.
ONU will be back on the road this Wednesday, Sept. 13 at No. 7 University of Northwestern Ohio at 3 p.m. (EST).
