ELGIN, Ill. — After capturing a win on Saturday night the Olivet Nazarene University baseball team needed to keep momentum moving forward on Monday afternoon against the Titans of Indiana University-South Bend. The Tigers and Titans were playing for a right to play later that evening and continue to move on the CCAC Tournament. Yet, it was a six-run sixth inning for IU-South Bend that was the difference in its 7-4 win over Olivet. The loss by the Tigers knocked them out of the postseason tournament.
The Tigers (32-19) started freshman Wes Tobin (FR/Dover, N.H.) (7-3). He went 5 1/3 innings allowing seven runs – six earned – off eight hits while striking out four and walking two. Alexander DeYoung (FR/Thornton, lll.) came in relief and went 2 1/3 innings walking only one batter. Chris Rhynes (SO/Vista, Calif.) got the final batter of the eighth inning.
IU-South Bend (24-25) started Trey Bickel (5-7) who pitched seven innings, allowing four runs off nine hits while striking out five. Zane Gonzalez (3) earned the save allowing three hits through two innings and struck out two.
Through the first three of innings of Monday's matinee, only two hits were tallied between both teams. In the top of the fourth Kurtis Minton (JR/Decatur, Ill.) put the Tigers on the board first with a RBI single. ONU went ahead 2-0 in the fifth inning when Jack Hillegonds (FR/Dyer, Ind.) leadoff the inning with a solo homerun, his second of the season. Gabe Sevigny (SR/Terre Haute, Ind.) followed it up with a triple and later scored on a Tanner McLain (JR/Gifford, Ill.) sacrifice fly. The Titans made it 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a throwing error. The Tigers failed to score another run in the sixth leaving men on first and third. Consequently the Titans scored six runs in the bottom half to take a 7-3 lead. Six of the first seven to step to the plate in the inning reached, including four singles. A Zack Lazenby triple with the bases loaded scored the go-ahead run for IU-South Bend. ONU made it 7-4 in the seventh on a Bryan Klendworth (SR/Crystal Lake, Ill.) RBI single. The Tigers went down in order in the eighth and in their last at-bat, ONU loaded the bases with two outs, but a fly out ended the game.
Notably, Bryan Klendworth finished his career with 215 career hits, which is the third-most all-time for the Tigers. He is also tied for second all-time in hit-by-pitch with 41. Alexander DeYoung's appearance in Monday's game was his 23rd of the season, good for the second-most in a season in Tiger history. Chris Martinez (JR/Vista, Calif.) ended the season with 19 appearances, tied for the fourth-most. He also had seven saves this season, the third-most saves in a season for ONU. Nick Campe (JR/Manteno, Ill.) had 83 strikeouts this season, tied for the fourth-most in a season and his 58 appearances in his career are fourth-most ever for the Tigers.
