WILMORE, Ky. — After returning from their spring break trip the Olivet Nazarene University baseball team traveled south one more time before beginning the conference season the following weekend. ON Saturday, the Tigers played two games at Asbury University (Ky.), the first against Viterbo University (Wis.), Olivet shutout the V-Hawks 6-0 and they followed it up with 3-1 win over Asbury in the afternoon. Two outstanding pitching performances by starters Wes Tobin (FR/Dover, N.H.) and Nick Campe (JR/Manteno, Ill.) were the catalyst for a two-win day. They along with five relievers stranded 25 baserunners while only allowing one unearned run all day.
ONU (11-10) sent freshman Wes Tobin (3-2) to the mound in Saturday's first game against Viterbo (2-16). He went 6 2/3 innings allowing only five hits while striking out three and walking four. Isaiah Robles (FR/Potomac, Ill.) struck out one in 2/3 of an inning and Alexander DeYoung (FR/Thornton, lll.) struck out one batter in 2/3 of an inning. Adam Schoenle (FR/Chicago, Ill.) pitched the ninth inning and allowed two hits but struck out two.
Viterbo started Max Verdegan (4-4) who went four innings allowing five runs – three earned – off three hits while walking four and striking out four. D.J. Raasch pitched an inning of relief allowing only one hit. Connor Kokott finished the final three innings allowing one run off two hits while striking out two.
The Tigers nearly struck first in the bottom of the first inning as they stranded runners on second on third but a third strikeout ended the inning. ONU waited until the third inning to make it a 1-0 game. Ben Hill (JR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) singled which scored R.W. Rienow (FR/Wheaton, Ill.) and Ryan Campbell (SO/Mt. Vernon, Ill.). They added a third run in the fourth after two walks leadoff the inning. Sam Kippen (FR/Syracuse, N.Y.) and Kurtis Minton (JR/Decatur, Ill.) stole second and third and Tyler Fisher (FR/Limestone, Ill.) grounded out to score Minton. After another scoreless inning for Viterbo the Tigers made it 5-0 in the fifth when two errors by the V-Hawk defense helped the Tigers. Both runners, Tanner McLain (JR/Gifford, Ill.) and Rienow eventually scored. ONU scored their sixth and final run in the eighth in when B.J. Bufton (FR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) crossed home on a wild pitch.
In the second game of the day the Tigers started Nick Campe (2-3) who went seven innings allowing one unearned run off five hits. He struck out five and walked three. Ryan Mills (SO/Lake in the Hills, Ill.) recorded two outs in relief while allowing two hits and Chris Martinez (JR/Vista, Calif.) (2) earned the save forcing the final out on a ground ball.
Christian Beckley started for Asbury (10-15), who went seven innings allowing one run off two hits while striking out 10. Joey Johnson allowing two unearned runs off one hit in the eighth inning.
Just like in the Viterbo game the Tigers scored first but against the Eagles they did it in the first inning. The second batter of the game, Rienow reached on a hit-by-pitch, and made his way to third on the next two at-bats and scored when Ben Hill was caught stealing. The Eagles threatened in the third when they had runners on second and third with one out but Campe forced a ground and got a strike out to end the inning. Asbury stranded two more runners in the fourth and eventually scored in the fifth to tie the game. Cokick singled to leadoff the inning and scored when Jennings reached on an error. Asbury again threatened in the bottom of the seventh with a single and two walks but a fielders' choice got Campe out of the inning. In the top of the eighth Olivet benefited from two errors committed by the Asbury shortstop which led to Tyler Fisher and B.J. Bufton to reach. Alex Campe (FR/Manteno, Ill.), who ran for Fisher, and Bufton both scored to make it 3-1. In the bottom half the Eagles used two singles with two outs to make it exciting but Chris Martinez got a fielders' choice to end the game.
ONU begins CCAC action on Saturday, March 25 with a doubleheader at home against Judson University (Ill.) at 12:30 p.m.
