BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – For the 12th time this season the ONU men's basketball team tallied 90 or more points and on Saturday they did it in a 99-71 win over CCAC foe Indiana University-South Bend. The Tigers were led by three outstanding performances from Tyler Crater (SR/Hampshire, Ill.) (27 points), Nic Reed (FR/New Albany, Ind.) (26 points) and Chris Green (JR/Bonfield, Ill.) (23 points). ONU's win was their seventh in the their last eight games and now are above .500 in league play for the first time all season at 10-9 in seventh place. The Tiger defense was tough again holding an opponent to a season-low 71 points, their fourth straight opponent under 80 after doing so four other times all season.
Unlike the last few games for ONU (12-15, 10-9), which they started fast, it took them 2:11 to score on Saturday afternoon. Yet, when they took the lead with 16:59 to play in the first half on a Chris Green three-pointer they never relinquished the lead again. Olivet opened up a 19-10 lead with 13:41 to play after two Ryan Carl (SR/Galesburg, Ill.) free-throws and six minutes later led 31-18 after five consecutive points by Nic Reed. However, a 8-2 run by the Titans (12-16, 6-13) made it 33-26 with only six minutes to play in the half but Tyler Crater scored two straight times followed by a Chris Green jumper that again gave them a 13-point lead with 3:34 left, their largest of the half. That's when the Titans connected on four three-pointers before the horn sounded and made three free-throws to cut their deficit to only 48-41 at the break.
Josiah Blan (SO/Minooka, Ill.) opened the second half with a lay-up but IUSB scored the next six points to make it 50-47, the closest they had been since the opening minutes of the game. ONU responded with a Nic Reed three-point play and Blan bucket to provide an eight-point cushion again. Over the next 2:30 minutes the Tigers extended their lead to 15 points and it didn't stop there. With 8:23 to play in the game the Tigers led 74-58 and proceeded to go on a 14-0 run to make it a 30-point game. In the middle of the run Nic Reed, Chris Green and Tyler Crater made consecutive three-pointers. By the 4:42 mark Zach Tuxhorn (SO/Naperville, Ill.) had extended ONU's lead to 33 points, their largest of the game. Seniors Sherrarr Tate (SR/Chillicothe, Ill.) and Abe Barwegen (SR/Otsego, Mich.) were also able to score late for the Tigers in the win.
Olivet shot 49.3 percent from the floor, shooting a season-high 50.0 percent from behind the arc; making 13-of-26 three-pointers. They had 23 more shots than the Titans. IUSB shot 44.2 percent from field and went 9-for-28 from behind the arc. Olivet went 12-for-14 from the foul line compared to 16-for-24 for IUSB.
ONU dominated on the glass 42-to-23, collecting 12 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second chance points. IUSB had one offensive rebound of their own and had two second chance points. The Tigers turned the ball over nine times giving up 11 points off turnovers and had 25 assists. The Titans had 15 turnovers and ONU scored 21 points off those possessions. The Tigers finished with 10 steals to seven for IUSB.
Tyler Crater led the Tigers with 27 points on 11-for-18 shooting, going 4-for-4 from the three-point line and 1-for-2 from the free-throw line. He added seven rebounds and five assists in 30 minutes. With 1,323 career points, he is 26th all-time in scoring. He is also 12th all-time with 162 made three-pointers and is now 16th all-time in field goals attempted with 1,125.
Nic Reed scored 26 points going 9-for-16 from the field, 2-for-6 from the three-point line and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. He added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in 32 minutes. Chris Green had a season-high 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting, going 6-of-10 from behind the arc. He added three rebounds and four assists in 26 minutes.
Off the bench, Zach Tuxhorn had six points going 2-for-3 and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line adding three rebounds and two steals in 12 minutes. Luke Tuttle (FR/Hampshire, Ill.) had three points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 18 minutes.
